Summary:l

This was the first time Wigan had drawn Hull KR away in the Challenge Cup and with Rovers being in Division Two at this particular time, this was Wigan's first visit to the "New" Craven Park. Sometimes you have to win ugly and on a very muddy field, that's what Wigan did here. Wigan should have gone 2-0 up but Joe Lydon shockingly missed a penalty shot in front of the posts. Instead a Mike Fletcher penalty put Rovers 2-0 ahead. Wigan responded with a fortunate try on 37 minutes. A bomb from Shaun Edwards was fumbled by Rovers full back David Lightfoot and David Marshall was on hand to hack forward and score under the posts. Lydon didn't miss this time, 6-2 to Wigan. Rovers still had time to kick a second penalty for a 6-4 half time score. The second half saw no scoring with play often bogged down in field on the heavy pitch. Rovers perhaps deserved a replay for this effort but Wigan hung on to get through.
