Wigan took a while to get to grips with this match but a storm coming in changed a mild, dry night at kick off into a cold night with hailstorm hitting the pitch for much of the first half. The pitch soon became heavy and it was only when Sheffield tired late that the score opened wide. A Mark Aston penalty goal put Sheffield 2-0 up but Andy Gregory's work saw Dean Bell score. The 6-2 half time lead was only extended up to the hour by a Joe Lydon penalty for 8-2 but in the final quarter Wigan found four tries to win 30-2 in the end. It was a win that took Wigan six points clear top of the table.
