Summary:

A fifth minute red card to Steve Hampson, his third send off of the season, for a high shot on Colin Maskill left Wigan doing it tough for the remaining 75 minutes of this Regal Trophy Quarter Final at Headingley. Maskill got up to kick Leeds into a 2-0 lead and added a second penalty in the 18th Minute. Wigan had also suffered the loss of Andy Goodway to injury but despite being a man down, Wigan hit back to take the lead. Dean Bell's offload allowed Henderson Gill to squeeze over in the right corner and Joe Lydon converted off the touchline to make it 6-4. Leeds then went 10-6 up when Carl Gibson got on the end of a grubber but before half time, Bell provided the pass for Wigan's second try. This time Mark Preston got over in the left corner with the failed kick leaving the scores tied at 10-10. That proved to be that. The BBC Grandstand viewers who were getting the Second Half Live saw no points scored with Wigan having to defend a lot of the time. They held on to earn a replay back at Central Park. This match ended up being Henderson Gill's last Wigan appearance, ending a 226 match career that had begun in October 1981.
