Summary:l

The Challenge Cup Semi Final draw, which had placed Wigan and Saints in separate semis, meant the Good Friday derby had to be postponed till this Thursday Night. Both sides had reached Wembley so this was a dress rehearsal for Wembley but this match was more important for Wigan with the league title still at stake.

The final score looks comfortable but it was far from it for Wigan. Wigan suffered a blow early when Andy Platt limped off in the 4th Minute before the two sides had exchanged penalty goals for 2-2. The first try came when an error from Dave Tanner was pounced upon by David Myers to score for Wigan Wigan. That made it 8-2 but Saints equalised on 32 minutes with Tea Ropati's dash being converted by Tanner for 8-8. Wigan still had time to regain the lead before the break with Kelvin Skerrett scoring for a 14-8 lead after Botica converted.

Two penalties extended Wigan's lead to 18-8 but Saints came back on the hour with a try from Les Quirk reducing the lead to 18-14 after Tanner converted. Stress was now all over Central Park from the Wigan faithful but a try in the 73rd Minute from Martin Dermott, from an Andy Gregory kick, eased the nerves and Myers claimed a second three minutes later to earn Wigan a vital victory.
