Summary:l

Widnes' slip up in midweek gave Wigan great hope in the title race. They needed to get their own job done first though and they had to work hard to see off the challenge of a spirit Salford outfit. Ellery Hanley scored to put Wigan up 6-0 after as many minutes but Joe Lydon missed two shots to increase the lead before finally kicking a penalty. Steve Kerry had kicked a penalty for Salford too before Ian Bragger's try brought them back into the game at 8-6. Lydon himself though would score a try, from Hanley's set up, to put Wigan 14-6 up at the break.

News was filtering through to Central Park of Widnes trailing Hull KR 10-6 at half time but a second try from Ian Bragger would leave Wigan themselves sweating at 14-12. The key moments came between the 64th and 67th Minute. Wigan would score twice with first Adrian Shelford crashing over before he turned provider to get Denis Betts over three minutes later. That took the score to 24-12 but Salford still didn't go away with a try back from Steve Kerry making it 24-18 but Mark Preston settled the nerves with a late finish. Widnes meanwhile had fought back to beat Hull KR 16-13.
