Summary:l

Now this was a massive Boxing Day with Saints holding a 100% record in the table and Wigan being in second place having lost just once in the league. In fact Saints were defending a record of 25 league victories in a row. The game didn't really live up to the billing though, described as "tense, messy, shapeless and bewilderingly refereed" match in one newspaper. Henderson Gill opened the scoring with a seventh minute penalty goal before David Stephenson scored and converted his try for an 8-0 lead after 25 minutes. Saints only responses came from Paul Loughlin penalties and Wigan went further ahead on 57 minutes a try for Gill would in the end seal the result Wigan's way even though a quarter of the game still remained. So Wigan had ended Saints winning run, but the enemy still remained top of the table, having played a game more than Wigan. However they would go on to lose both of their next two league games as well, away at both Widnes and Halifax.
