Summary:

Ellery Hanley was absent here after "stunning" Wigan with a transfer request two days before this Second Round John Player tie against Swinton at Central Park. At this point, Wigan's deal to sign Wally Lewis for 16 matches was still expected to go ahead, so rumours suggested that Hanley was complaining in some way about that. Without him, all looked fine in this tie with a 16-4 half time lead but Graeme West had been sent off and by the end 12 man Wigan were sweating heavily on the final 20-14 score. They hung on to make the Quarter Finals.
