The first silverware of the season was up for grabs with Wigan meeting Oldham in the Grünhalle Lager Lancashire Cup Final at Knowsley Road in St Helens. It had been a tight opening half hour with no scoring until Oldham took a shock lead with a great burst from Bruce Clark sending Gary Bridge over for a try in which David Hobbs converted for 6-0. Henderson Gill quickly kicked a penalty to reduce that lead to 6-2 but Wigan poached the lead just before half time with a try from Mike Ford, which was converted by Gill. Wigan went on to dominate after the break with a brace of tries from Shaun Edwards being added to with one from Joe Lydon, who also kicked a drop goal.
