Summary:l

Wigan here gave a debut to their other South African signing Rob Louw on the bench in this repeat of the John Player Final played the weekend before. Wigan also had Steve Ella absent for the first time since he signed and their team included 17 year old Great Britain Colts Richard Russell in the centres and Ian Lucas at prop. Tries from Ellery Hanley and Graeme West on 13 and 18 minutes respectively helped Wigan into a 8-0 lead that was only responded to by a John Dorahy penalty. Then two minutes after the interval, an error from Garry Clark, under pressure from Henderson Gill, was scooped up by Richard Russell who sent Andy Goodway in for 12-0. None of the tries were converted but although Rovers responded with a try from Gary Prohm in the 64th Minute, the lead was enough to be held. The only disappointment on the day was losing Ray Mordt to an 11th Minute injury.
