Wigan were looking for their second silverware of the season in this John Player Trophy Final against current holders Hull KR at Elland Road. Referee John Holdsworth had to break up pushing and shoving between Steve Hampson and John Dorahy after just 90 seconds but the game eventually settled down into a tough battle. The opening score came in the 11th Minute with Greg Dowling kicking a drop goal for a 1-0 lead. That score until the 29th Minute when Shaun Wane made a cheeky dart from dummy half to score under the posts. That left an easy conversion for David Stephenson to make it 7-0. A minute before half time though, Wigan's good first half work was undone slightly by John Lydiat scoring in the right corner for a 7-4 break score.

That score held until the 57th Minute when a long pass from Dorahy allowed David Laws to score in the left corner. Conversion was missed but it allowed Rovers to lead 8-7. They only led for three minutes though because Wigan quickly responded with Henderson Gill and Steve Ella combining to get Mike Ford over. Conversion missed but the 11-8 lead would remain for the final 19 minutes with Rovers day being impounded by Chris Burton being sent off four minutes from time.
