Summary:l

In recent weeks Saints had fallen from 1st to 3rd in the table with Wigan rising from 10th to 4th. Saints still had title hopes but they needed to win this to keep up those hopes. A try from Jimmy Hornby and a penalty goal from George Fairbairn had Wigan leading 5-0 after 20 minutes but a try from Les Jones, converted by Geoff Pimblett had Saints level 5-5 at the break. Wigan then went in front again with a try from Green Vigo, unconverted for 8-5, and although they held that lead until the hour mark, Saints finished far the stronger side. A second try from Les Jones and one for Eric Chisnall saw Saints home for a vital victory that was sweetened with news of leaders Featherstone losing 12-7 away at Wakefield.
