Summary: |
It was early season nemesis Swinton in the Challenge Cup Semi Finals at St Helens. Swinton took a 2-0 lead with a 11th Minute penalty goal from Gowers but he failed to double it with a second penalty. Wigan found the first try of the match in the 23rd Minute. Cliff Hill, Frank Parr and Eric Ashton combined to send Keith Holden over for 3-2. Five minutes later a superb pass from Roy Evans sent Colin Clarke over for 8-2 with Laurie Gilfedder converting. Later Wigan found a killer try just before half time with Trevor Lake finishing and Gilfedder converting for 13-2. Swinton came out strong second half with a try from Speed reducing the lead to 13-5 and they rallied in great hope. Those hopes became extinguished on the hour with a great from Cliff Hill being converted for 18-5 before Gilfedder also added a penalty for 20-5. Swinton were now demoralised and the tackling was weak as Lake crossed for his second with Ashton converting this time for 25-5. Swinton did find a consolation from Bate but it was too late. |
