Summary: |
A second loss in a month to the enemy put the fatal hammer blow into Wigan's title challenge. They had taken the lead with a try from Trevor Lake for 3-0 but Saints soon hit back with a two penalty goals from Kel Coslett and a Drop Goal from Alex Murphy putting them 6-3 ahead. Laurie Gilfedder then reduced that to 6-5 with a penalty for Wigan just before the break. The game breaker would come in the 50th minute with a bit of magic from Murphy seeing Len Killeen claim a try for Saints. That was quickly followed with a try from Murphy himself and a conversion from Coslett to this try made it 14-5 to Saints. That spell would lay the platform for Saints to inflict a damaging defeat on Wigan. Rivals Swinton now had six matches in hand and just needed to win four of them to over-haul Wigan for the title. |
