Summary:l |
Wigan suffered a blow before kick off when Stand Off Dave Bolton was ruled out with a hand injury suffered in the Christmas Day victory over Salford. Saints took the lead when Tom van Vollenhoven outpaced Mick Sullivan for a score which led to a 5-0 lead after Peter Fearis converted. Wigan were under more pressure soon after but a kick from Fearis was returned by Fred Griffiths 75 metres for a Wigan try that he converted for 5-5. Before half time though, Alex Murphy send Van Vollenhoven over for a second try that went unconverted but still an 8-5 lead. Into the second half and two penalty goals from Griffiths had put Wigan 9-8 ahead but a converted try from Jan Prinsloo put Saints back into a 13-9 lead. That proved to be that with Saints going closest to adding to the scoring but Sullivan's "crash tackle" denied Van Vollenhoven a hat-trick. |
