Wigan Warriors v Salford City Reds - Under 20s Valvoline Cup.
Friday 12th August 2011. Kick Off 7:00pm at Co-Operative Stadium, Orrell.

Match Report

Well the score line says it all really. The Under 20s previous biggest victory of the season came in the away game at Salford in March and they topped that here with a 12 try rout.

Salford did compete reasonably well for the first quarter but the fact they were failing to complete their own sets was just playing into Wigan's hands. One such mistake gave Wigan good territory and a kick to the left corner from Sam Powell was easily collected by Ryan King. No defender was near him. Easy touch down but Jack Murphy failed to convert.

Once the second Wigan try came on 17 minutes it really was one way traffic from then on in. Good try as well. From about half way, Jack Murphy broke down the left and found Scott Leatherbarrow inside. He went under the sticks, Murphy converted for 10-0.

Third try on 23 minutes. A gift for Amos Roberts. Kick went up towards the right, Salford full back Jack Holmes fumbled and Roberts just plonked down on the loose ball. Good touchline conversion for 16-0.

Great try for the fourth score on 28 minutes. Substitute prop James Greenwood broke clear, passed to Leatherbarrow, then retook the pass to go under the sticks. Easy conversion for 22-0.

Three tries in a five minute spell just before half time really did turn the heat up on the visitors. First Jack Hughes scored from close range by taking a perfect bullet pass before Matty Russell claimed two close range efforts himself, against some poor Salford tackling. Three more conversions for Murphy made it 40-0 at the break.

It took ten minutes to claim the first score of the second half. Eamon O'Carroll intercepting a pass to score an easy one from ten metres out. Murphy converted for 46-0.

Not sure if Matty Russell went off injured or not but he was replaced by Jayden Sandford around this time with the sub going on the wing and Amos reverting to full back.

Blake Mahovic had also come off the bench around this time and he was quickly on the score sheet with supporting tries on 54 and 58 minutes. Two more conversions made it 58-0.

Then the game went into a bit of a lull. Salford had a rare attack after a 40/20 kick but despite managing to force a drop out, the fact Salford's Ashley Gibson caught the drop out with a foot in touch summed up their night really.

Into the final ten minutes and Wigan capped off their good performance with two more tries. First prop Greg Burke did well to trap a loose ball with his feet, pick up and race over from close range, before a nice kick to the left corner was well touched down by Sandford. Conversions to both those tries from Murphy rounded up an easy 70-0. The referee chose to give mercy to Salford by blowing up 45 seconds early.

Postscript to this Game

After this win it was decided that the previously postponed Wigan v Huddersfield Under 20s game on July 23rd would not be replayed and defaulted as a 26-0 win to Wigan. That decision meant Wigan went four points clear at the top of the Under 20s table and with just one match to play (ironically away against second placed Warrington) they couldn't be caught. A first place finished means they will meet guaranteed second place Warrington at Orrell in a Under 20s Grand Final Qualifier on the weekend of 17/18th September. Those two sides will still fulfil the final league game at Warrington on 3rd/4th September even though their is nothing riding on the fixture.
