Wigan Warriors v Hull FC - Tetley's Super League VI Qualifying Play Off
Friday 21st September 2001. Kick Off 8:00pm at JJB Stadium

Match Report

Well done lads a top win in a top game. If we play like that I cannot see a problem. You can book the hotels around Old Trafford. Come on Leeds tomorrow against Saints.

The pressure is on Wigan are on the march. And you must say they deserved it. Hats though must go off to Hull who were not phased by there first ever play off match. Hull in fact has the foresight to go in front.

It was Jason Smith who scored the try to put the Sharks 6-0 up. They did deserve the lead and we for a time did look shell-shocked. But as they say come'th the hour come'th the man and Wigans talisman Andy Farrell scored the reply and converted to bring the scores level Farrel scoring from a Matthew Johns pass.

They were in front 5 minuets later Brian Carney racing through to score. Faz as ever converted. But hull to there credit cam eback and played some top Rugby and came at Wigan better than any side I have seen this season and before Hulls David Maiden scored Hulls try they has one disallowed. Which from where I was looked a decent enough try. Maiden scored following a cock up from David Hodsgon - you are supposed tu jump for a bomb when the opposition are coming. He didn't and looked a plonker.

Then came the Wigan party piece just as Hull were looking to half time the Michael Owen of Rugby League scored his 27th try of the season to bring Wigan in front at the half.

Wigan came out for the second wondering where Tony Smith was Hull's man of the half was nowhere to be seen. So has not to keep the brothers apart Jason Smith dislocated his shoulder and he was also out for the count.

You would think that that would be the turning point. And went further behined when an Andy Farrell penalty was popped over following a Scott Logan clothes line on Matty Johns. This was followed by a Neil Cowie Frank Bruno right hook which will see him banned.

Wigan then apparently started to take control, and we thought that it was only a matter of time before it was game set an match. But against the run of play and against the wishes of the Wigan faithful who thought that the video ref was blind. Hull were given a try scored by Luke Flesch.

It was all Hull and we thought that we might be playing Leeds next week. And if it wasn't for a try saving tackle by wonder boy Radlinski it might have been.

Both teams were going for it and it was really going to be next try wins. And if it the 'what happens next round' you wouldn't have thought that Denis Betts would score the try that effectively saw us through.

Andy Farrell did the old Bradford trick and utilised the drop goal to see us through.

In the whole is was a magic game. Lets hope for a magic weekend with Leeds beating the Saints.
