Broughton's title chances had gone but with two defeats in the five days prior to this match but they beat Wigan well here in what was the visitors last match of the season. At the top of the table, a shock 2-0 loss for Bradford at Batley allowed Oldham to return to the top of the table with 16-6 victory over Runcorn.

The title race was decided on the Easter Monday 24th April with Oldham knowing if they won their game they would be champions. They were facing Hull at Watersheddings and won easily 23-0 to complete the title success. Bradford were left to rue their costly 2-0 loss to Batley on the Saturday which  now left their last game of the season against Swinton the following Saturday meaningless.
