Last Season's top seven teams from the Lancashire and Yorkshire competitions resigned from the leagues to form a new Northern Rugby League competition. So that meant Broughton, Leigh, Oldham, Runcorn, Salford, Swinton and Warrington were no longer in the Lancashire League. They were replaced by Birkenhead, Lancaster, Morecambe, Altrincham, Radcliffe and bizarrely Hull Kingston Rovers, even though they couldn't be further from Lancashire within the Rugby League heartlands.

This season also saw the introduction of the South West Lancashire League competition, extending the South West Lancashire Cup that had taken place the previous year. Wigan, Warrington, St Helens, Widnes, Leigh and Runcorn all took part but if the sides met in the league itself, those results would count towards the South West Lancashire League as well.

Wigan began the new season with a good win over St Helens.
