Saints made it five derby victories in a row with this one at Central Park but it was a game full of drama. During the second half Wigan 10. Jimmy Featherstone and St Helens 13. Ray Cale were sent off during the second half in separate incidents. The referee had incensed one supporter so much that he ran on to the field and "attempted to punch the head of the referee". In the ensuing scrimmage, a police sergeant was "bowled over". Also during this game a Fire broke out in the Popular Stand which required two fire engines to attend and extinguish.
