Match Preview: Leeds (H) 22.08.08 @ JJB Stadium

Wigan Warriors v Leeds Rhinos - Super League XIII Round 26..
Friday 22nd August 2008. Kick Off 8:00pm at JJB Stadium.

Wigan go into this hame still chasing the possibility of home play off match despite the odds being very much stacked against us.

We have to beat Leeds and then St Helens away and hope that Warrington slip up in either of their much easier remaining games against Castleford and Huddersfield.

Meanwhile we still have Bradford on our backs below. If they win both their remaining games and we lose both ours they will take 5th spot off us and send us to Catalans in Round 1 of the play offs.

Personally I'm not fussed if we go to France or play Warrington away first. If given the choice I'd prefer to go to France first week rather than second week but that would mean we end the regular season on a low which would do us no good.

So all Wigan can do is attempt to end the regular season on a high. Whatever will be will be and this Friday's clash with Leeds will be a hum-dinger. The Rhinos players will be desperate to win having lost to us twice in the league this season.

Wigan's best two performances of the season have for me been in the two league encounters with Leeds and another big night on Friday would be just the tonic ahead of a timely two week break going into the business end of the season.

Coach Noble has some selection headaches with the expected return of Trent Barrett. Tim Smith has done a pretty good job covering him last two weeks. Some say play Trent at loose forward but personally I think Joel Tomkins has been superb playing at 13 in recent weeks. He's "hot" in the try scoring stakes further down this match preview with 6 tries in his last 8 matches.

Would be a harsh move to drop Tomkins although he could move him to second row which would mean dropping either Bailey or Hansen? That's probably would will happen but it's a difficult conundrum about whether to upset the balance of a side that hasn't lost for three weeks.

However Barrett and Smith on the pitch together could be a lethal combination. I suppose we've nothing to lose in trying it out. Or maybe one on the bench as an impact player would be better?

A difficult conundrum maybe but a nice on to have. Should be a great game!
