Wigan Warriors v Leeds Rhinos - Super League XIII Round 20..
Friday 4th July 2008. Kick Off 8:00pm at JJB Stadium.

Wigan's season this year has been like a first timer on the top diving board at Wigan baths. They've often gotten the courage to climb up to the top board but they've never actually dove off - they've always lost the bottle and turned back.

For example they started the season well with 3 wins from 4 but when it came to the crunch derbies at Warrington and St Helens they failed - miserably - both times!

But hey they recovered well to pluck the courage up to try the top board again after home wins over Hull KR and Wakefield and a brilliant away win at Leeds. We were ready to dive but no, we went back again with defeats to Catalans, Bradford and the disgraceful showing in Cardiff.

Then came victories over Warrington and Wakefield before a respectable cup defeat at Leeds. Maybe just maybe we could jump off? Again, no, a defeat in France and a miserable (and lucky) draw at Castleford saw us climb back down.

Now I'm not saying last week's win over Harlequins has got us back on the top board ready to dive, but a win over Leeds will certainly get us ready to try again.

But can they do it? Because Wigan can't suffice with diving off that top board once - they need to be doing it again and again and again before they become title challengers.

I've been saying for weeks - hmmm yeah we'll be ok, we've got seven of our last ten games at the JJB and in the previous two seasons we've finished by winning our last 8 home games. But this year I'm not feeling the momentum going into the final push.

Fact is, if we are to hold any aspirations of a Grand Final challenge we need to win on Friday. We need to be ultra solid in defence and take our chances. We can't afford the silly mistakes and bad penalties against us.

We need to gain some momentum and confidence. A loss on Friday and the end of season is going to be closing in before we've got chance to climb to the baby diving board again - never mind finally jumping off the top!
