it's the right decision to omit all last years test stars
from pre season entirely should be judged over the next
month or so but regardless of the line up, this was a
disappointing final pre season outing.
were impressive to be fair. They had experience in the
halves with their new combination of Robert Lui and Michael
Dobson combining well to cause Wigan constant problems. It
was a tough ask for Wigan's fourth choice and youngest
hooker Josh Ganson also against Tommy Lee who has been
around a few years now, but I thought he went well during
his second spell.
disappointment was that they had plenty of territory to
retaliate to Salford's early score but the pace of the play
was far too slow in comparison to the home side. Salford
were keen to play fast and get out wide whilst Wigan played
too much one out rugby and only really found the wings in
the final quarter of the game when they scored three tries.
had already been done though. Tries to Mark Flanagan, Josh
Griffin, Michael Dobson, Robert Lui, Ryan Lannon and Greg
Johnson had put them 32-0 up and this proved to be a fair
reflection of the contest up to that point.
32-0 is impressive for Salford, they didn't half get giddy
with it at times and were lucky that Wigan played so poorly
in attack that they didn't punish them for pushing the
pass. Three times in the first half they gifted us
territory in their own quarter and had we found scores this
would have been a good even contest. Our attack was too
flatulent at that point though.
combination of a tiring Salford and a quicker Wigan tempo
did lead to late scores for Dom Manfredi, Oliver Gildart
and Tony Clubb but it was hard to draw any positives from
the rest of the game.
defence early in the second half was particularly low.
Stats men will have got sore fingers recording the missed
tackles by Wigan but overall I think that whilst the result
isn't very impressive, I come back to my view that the
slowness of Wigan's play in the first half proved the
difference here. Had it been faster, sharper and matched
Salford's effort then the whole mood of what followed would
have produced a better result. That's the lesson to learn
from this one I think.
