Under 19s: Wigan 78 Midlands Region 8 Posted by Bilko

Wigan Under 19s v
Midlands Regional Academy -
Under 19s Academy
2:00pm at Edge Hall Road, Orrell.
This friendly was held on a day in which Seven Wigan Under
19s were playing for England against France in Carcassonne.
Lewis Heckford, Jack Higginson, Josh Ganson, Macauley
Davies, Kyle Shelford, Jake Moore and Jack Wells were all
playing in the 34-33 test defeat whilst regular half back
Jake Shorrocks was also absent.
So it was a Wigan side
missing many regulars but they enjoyed a great run out
against a Midlands Regional side. The gulf in class was
self evident in the 78-8 final scoreline but I thought
Midlands did themselves no disgrace. They took two tries
well and showed plenty of desire. They just didn't have the
fitness to keep up with Wigan's pace.
Liam Marshall led the way in the try scoring with four
tries with two each for Nick Gregson, David Thompson and
Liam Paisley. Kieran Sherratt, Max Dudley, Paddy Jones and
Josh Woods got one try each with Woods also converting 11
of the 14 tries.
The game also saw a female referee in charge. Tara Jones
had done the Wigan v Huddersfield Under 16s game last month
and handled this game well also. I hope she can go on to
make a good career in the game as a match official and be
allowed to do so on merit rather than get pushed forward
into pressure for headlines.
