Castleford Tigers v Wigan Warriors - First Utility Super League 20 - Round 4
Friday 6th March 2015. Kick Off 8:00pm at Mend-a-Hose Jungle

Match Report

Horrible Night this at Castleford. Not really much I can add that the score line doesn't already tell you. To a man the Wigan side wilted away to a soft defeat.

Take nothing away from Castleford. They were clinical with practically every opportunity they were offered by Wigan, but we didn't half make it easy for them with penalties helping towards their first three tries and the less said about our defence the better.

With Joel Tomkins and Liam Farrell both giving away dissent penalties during the game, I had to be critical of them as senior players but this is a team problem.

Before this match I was reasonably happy with the season's start. Yes we had dropped three points but we had gotten 16 and 14 point leads at both Widnes and Hull KR.

This performance though suggests I was kidding myself. The build up was all about how wrongs would be put right but this defeat was deeply worrying.

Castleford wanted it more. They ran harder and produced better effort all night and I'm not wanting to single out individuals, because like I said it's a team problem for me, but early in the game I saw Tony Clubb have rings run around him at the marker position. I didn't get chance to say it on commentary because Cas scored soon after but that was an effort that summed up what we saw from Wigan.

There was one positive out of the game and that was the effort of John Bateman and Josh Charnley to deny Cas a try late in the game. A clean break had been made and they chased back to stop him just short of the line. Wigan had been well demoralised by this point but that was a good effort to stop that try. They swung it wide left to score anyway but still worth a note.

I thought Larne Patrick had a good dig off the bench as well. That was it though. The rest was like sun bathing in a snow storm. Not a pleasant experience. The biggest problem is you can't see any leadership out their on the field. Facts can't lie, its just one win in seven games including our two main pre season games. What would we give to have an Andy Farrell type out there at the moment. It's going to be a big week towards playing Hull FC next Friday. That'll be an interesting night.
