Wigan Under 19s v Warrington Under 19s - Academy
Saturday 14th February 2015. Kick Off
2:00pm at Co-Operative Stadium, Orrell.

Match Report

With Wigan's opening academy fixture at Salford having been frozen off the week before, the Under 19s began their 2015 campaign with a repeat of the previous season's Grand Final against Warrington.

I thought it was an excellent display, particularly with the visitors having had a run out the week before. Yes at times first half their were plenty of wasted opportunities by Wigan, perhaps understand with a little lack of match sharpness, but they fought in the end to ensure the end result was pretty fair.

Wigan got an early lead with a Joe Bretherton (returning having missed the whole of the 2014 season injured) try, converted by Jake Shorrocks for 6-0, in the second minute and they spent pretty much the rest of the first half on the attack. A couple of tries being chalked off helped Warrington hang in at 6-0 and for me it was a bit of an injustice when they levelled the scores three minutes before half time.

In fairness though Brad Stanway should of scored fair earlier for Warrington, on probably their only attack before they scored, but managed to be tackled by his own boot laces whilst well in the clear. Anyway, Warrington did score through Toby King and Morgan Smith converted for 6-6.

Like I said, that was a bit of an injustice for me but perhaps justice was served when Gabriel Fell score right on half time to put Wigan back in front at 12-6 with Shorrocks converting. They then got an early try second half through Oliver Gildart for 18-6 with another conversion by Shorrocks.

Although 18-6 stuck on the scoreboard for the next twenty minutes but the drama continued when a almighty fight broke out on 51 minutes. Gabriel Fell and Harvey Livett in a one on one drew your eyes in but amazingly Fell didn't get sin binned whilst Livett did. But Wigan ended up being down to 11, opposed to Warrington's 12, with Joe Bretherton and Luke Waterworth both being dispatched for ten minutes.

Despite being a man down for a while, Wigan still always in total control with Warrington having offering very little from their half backs in particular.

The only way you could see Wigan under threat was if they gifted Warrington a try......and sadly that's just what happened after both sides had returned to thirteen. On 63 minutes a wild pass out to the left by Shorrocks was intercepted and returned 90 metres by Declan Kay for a try under the posts. Warrington now had big hope with an 18-12 scoreline after Morgan Smith converted.

Whilst I'm sure Matty Peet and his staff would not have been happy about that, at least it provided a test of metal in the last 15 minutes and his boys passed that well. Tries from Tom Davies and Jake Moore would again be converted for an end result of 30-12. Wigan could have been more clinical first half but for an opening match to the season, that was a good effort against top opposition.
