Only two fixtures had been played on the
previous three weekends due to poor weather. All in all this was only the
second game for Wigan in seven weeks. The weather was dampening the mood in
the war effort with awful conditions in the French trenches whilst the Germans were launching submarine warfare in an
attempt to starve Britain into submission. The move backfired on them though
with the Americans on February 3rd deciding to sever diplomatic relations
with Germany because their U-Boats were threatening US Ships. On the field
here Wigan found a win over Leigh with the loss of their half back Mooney to
injury second half being a big factor.
