Wigan's early season form was now floundering
with this third successive loss. Meanwhile, Wigan soldier Private William
Hurst was awarded a "distinguished conduct medal" for gallantry in the
trenches on September 26th in France. He had removed a bomb which had landed
in their trench and Private Hurst pulled out the fuse, threw it over the
parapet and thus saved the lives of several comrades. Legend!
