Prior to this Lancashire Cup Final, the Northern Union Committee had appealed for players to volunteer for war service "in view of the great need of recruits for the army". At this point recruitment was still voluntary with compulsory conscription not coming in until January 1916.

In this final, Wigan took an early lead with a Johnny Thomas penalty goal and that score carried to half time, although Rochdale had a try controversially disallowed. It was the 50th Minute that Rochdale went ahead with a try from a charge down of a kick from Jones. Corsi missed a conversion but they now held the lead 3-2. Wigan tried to rally but Rochdale managed to defend that slender lead to the end and win their second Lancashire Cup.
