It was around this time that the war really started to hit home. German troops were had advanced to Ypres in Belgium aiming to reach the French border ports of Dunkirk and Calais. Britain was desperate for this not to happen and thus a battle ensued in Ypres to stop their charge. Civilian casualties in Ypres were high as the two sides "limped to a halt" in poor weather conditions. This is when trenches began to be dug over the following few weeks with casualties high on both sides.

Meanwhile, at home in the Lancashire Cup, Wigan progressed but with little style against Leigh but their were off field arguments taking place over pay after the game. With attendances falling dramatically due to the war to almost half those of the previous season, the Northern Union Committee recommended clubs negotiated with players terms for reduced wages. Wigan put a reduction of 25% to their players and after this trip to Leigh, 34 first and second team players met to discuss and ultimately reject the plan. It left Wigan in a difficult position because many players had written contracts.

Wigan presented this quandary to the NU Committee the following Tuesday but they declared they had no jurisdiction over the matter. Two days later on Thursday 5th November, Wigan and their players met again to discuss this but the players unanimously stuck to their original rejection  and it left no choice but for a match against Warrington on Saturday 7th November having to be postponed.

Wigan's players were not alone. Halifax and Huddersfield players were also having the same argument with their clubs and their matches were also postponed. This stalemate rumbled on when on Thursday 12th November a all clubs players meeting, led by Wigan's Gwyn Thomas, met to discuss the matter further. It was decided at the meeting that the following Saturday's matches would go ahead "under protest" before another NU Commitee meeting on 17th November.
