Wigan Warriors v Catalans Dragons. Carnegie Challenge Cup Semi Final.
Sunday 29th July 2007. Kick Off 3:15pm at Halliwell Jones Stadium, Warrington.

Thoughts on the Match

How embarrassing was that. The fact we lost wasn't that much of a surprise to me, it is the way we lost that is hurtful to us Wigan fans.

19 minutes - 22-0 down in a semi final! That absolutely stinks and even if we had complete a miraculous comeback we wouldn't of deserved it.

The simple fact is that the French side wanted it more. They put more venom into their tackling.

Our players disgraced the whole history of the club. Clearly most of them do not realise what Wembley means to this town. The fact we won the first final at the old ground made this years cup challenge extra special, as we wanted to do it again.

You can't single out individuals here, collectively the whole team was piss poor aside from Liam Colbon who you could tell was hurting out there.

I just think back to that comment of Sean O'Loughlin which he made during the international break..........

"I've been hearing all about the beaches and the sunshine from some of the lads, but I've been taking no notice as usual. I suppose I might have gone away somewhere myself if I hadn't been picked."

Hearing about beaches and sunshine? All I'd want to hear as club captain is how we are going to win the cup and the league this year. If that was me I'd be giving those players the biggest kick up the arse and explaining non stop about the history of this club and what it means to pull on the Cherry & White shirt. He is a poor captain and should be sacked in the role. It was shown clearly on the BBC yesterday at half time when they showed a shot of the dressing room. Where was the rallying call when Nobby wasn't in the dressing room? Locky was mute - we should just call him Charlie Chaplin.

That comment sums up the situation at the club. It is a holiday camp for many players who are just here for the cash and it leads from the top. The chairman Maurice Lindsay has to take major responsibility. He has made us an absolute joke of a side during his return here. 8 coaches in 8 years, 5 of them sacked -only 1 trophy. We've cheated the salary cap twice and definitely we should be playing National League 1 rugby this year, We broke the salary cap by almost a quarter of a million pounds and yet fought relegation!  The biggest one for me was that he fought to get the points reduction reduced to 4 points when it should have been 8 points. We should be 2nd bottom of the league now but he bull shitted his way out of it and that is a disgrace to decent hard working chairman and fans of sides like Hull KR and Salford. We've probably have survived with 8 points off anyway but even so the two at the bottom deserved a chance to have a go at us.

End of the day it is us fans who continue to suffer. Our season is over now. People say we can still make the top 6 - Well what's the point? We are not going to win the league. We should be making a late bid for 3rd which would have left us in a decent position but that is now impossible.

The whole club needs burning down from top to bottom and starting afresh. Because despite our continued tremendous support we are going nowhere with the current regime in the building.

Story of the Match

Not much to say. Catalans ripped us apart first 20 minutes in building up a massive 22-0 lead. Casey McGuire, Adam Mogg, Casey McGuire and Vincent Duport all scored with pure ease as Wigan's defence melted. Stacey Jones converted all but the last of those 4 tries.

Wigan did hit back in the 35th minute with a try from Thomas Leuluai (converted by Pat Richards) but the real killer blow came right on half time when we gifted Jones a 2 point shot at goal. He kicked it and that made it 24-6 at half time.

First try of the second half is always crucial and the Dragons got it to seal the match. Duport scored his second and Jones' conversion and then a drop goal seconds later made it 31-6 with 28 minutes left.

Wigan hit back again with a try from Higham but a comeback never looked likely until Jones was sin binned on 62 mins for a blatant obstruction of a quick tap 20 restart. This allowed Wigan to get two quick tries. First Darrell Goulding went over then Mark Calderwood finished off a 80 metre run. 31-24 really did flatter us but with 12 minutes left it was game on.

We didn't deserve anything though and Catalans finished the match, with Jones back on the field, with a try from Jason Croker which made the final score 37-24.

Game Breaking Moment

Penalty Goal right on half time and first try of the second half to Catalans.

Top Player

Liam Colbon - Best of a bad bunch.

Reaction to the Action

Brian Noble: "It's not been a great week for the club, has it? It's up there with my worst days in the game. I am very low. I am very dejected. I'm dejected for the Wigan club and the fans and the players in particular. We've every right to be disappointed with what we dished up today. I am despondent and some of the players are pretty shattered and why not?"

Catalans coach Mick Potter: "The people in Perpignan love their rugby league and this will be a shot in the arm for French rugby league. Kids can look up and say I'd love to play at Wembley or play for a French team and play in marquee stadiums of the world. Even though we haven't had a top season, this has given us a boost of confidence for the team but also a little bit of credibility in French sport."

The thoughs on the match pretty much sum up the way all Wigan fans feel. No Passion, no desire, no pride no regard for the 1000's of fans who turn up every week. Lets be realistic we have 2 world class players in Barrett & Fielden (regardless of what people say). 2 Decent hookers (Higham, McIllorum), a good pack of youngsters, (Colburn, Prescott, O'Carroll, Goulding) & a good kicker. The rest of the squad need a good look in the mirror and ask do they really deserve to wear our famous shirt, or are they here for the cash. I almost feel sorry for Bailey a quality 2nd row playing as centre. A captain that goes missing from on game to the next & a fans favorite prop that only lasts on the field for 18mins. We need a shake up hopefully Lindsay going would be a start. I have seen Wigan on the terrace for well over 20 years I have seen us lose, but never surrender like some of the performances this year. (Hull KR, Wakefield etc). My grandad always says the same thing 3 little words and I must admit I am now starting to agree with him. He might have one good leg and not played proper rugby for 3 years, but BRING BACK FARRELL.
