Controversy reigned during this match over one of the tries scored by Joe Miller for Wigan. The referee awarded him a try but the Leigh full back Clarkson thoroughly disputed the decision. He ended up being sent off for dissent, to which one of the Leigh officials entered the field of play to argue the matter further. It was a rule that no one, except the 26 players, could enter the playing field without the permission of the referee and he too was ordered to leave. However, he refused to do so. In the end the referee had to use the police to eject the Leigh official from not only the field but also the ground itself. It was quite a strange rile up during an easy win for Wigan.
