Three days after the emotion of winning the Lancashire
Cup, the last thing Wigan perhaps needed was a trip over to Yorkshire to
play the side immediately below them in the league, Wakefield, who were
unbeaten at home in this season so far. It was perhaps an error to name an
unchanged side but Wigan had taken a 3-0 lead with a Johnny Thomas try but
it was quickly wiped out with two penalty goals putting Wakefield 4-3 ahead.
The home side had built a 12-3 lead by half time after tries from Burton and
Poynton and they extended that further after the interval before Lew Bradley
scored what proved to be a second half consolation. Wakefield jumped up to
second place with this win after Hunslet also lost whilst all three of
Wigan's defeats in the season so far had come in Yorkshire away games.
