Wigan and Oldham had finished the regular season with identical records and a meeting of the Northern Union Committee on the day before this match declared that the two sides would play off to decide first place, despite the fact both teams were guaranteed a home play off anyway. This extra game was Wigan's fifth match in eight days and with the play offs just a further three days away they had zero enthusiasm for this decider. Neither did Oldham and why a decider between two Lancashire sides was played over in Yorkshire was another mystery. Only Billy Winstanley remained in the side from the Easter Monday home victory over Hull and whilst Oldham's side was slightly stronger, Wigan won the match but the match was described as "feeble", "poor", "unexciting" and "pretty dull" for the 4,000 that attended. Wigan did have consolation of lifting the Lancashire League Trophy for this win and they would host Widnes in the play offs whilst Wakefield would travel to Oldham.
