Jim Leytham returned from injury to lead Wigan
to a spanking of Hull in the final match of the regular season at Central
Park. It was only the second half that the score blew out but Wigan never
looked in danger of defeat. Meanwhile a shock loss for Oldham away a
Broughton. The loss meant Oldham and Wigan finished with identical records.
Wigan had a massively better points average that Oldham but rules in these
days meant that was ignored. Teams had to come to a mutual agreement over
who would finish 1st or play off for top spot. Despite both sides being
guaranteed a home play off regardless of finishing first or second, a play
off was arranged on the following Wednesday.
