Summary:l
This was a repeat of the previous season's
championship final that Wigan had won but Oldham gained revenge here. They
had been the outstanding side of the season to be fair and had lost just 3
of their 31 league matches. Conditions were again poor with a heavy pitch
stifling the quality of the play. Oldham scored first with a try from Dixon,
that was converted by Wood, for a 5-0 lead. Wigan drew level though with
first a penalty goal from Jim Leytham and then an unimproved try from Lance
Todd. The 5-5 score carried until half time and Oldham re-took the lead with
an early second half penalty before Leytham kicked one himself for 7-7. The
game was tight and tense into the final quarter but a try from McCabe broke
Wigan and a second one followed from G.W Smith to complete a 13-7 Oldham
success.
