Wigan's match the previous Saturday had been postponed and they returned to action with the visit of Welsh side Merthyr Tydfil. The "Northern Union" had been desperate to break ground in Wales but three Welsh clubs, Aberdare, Barry and Mid-Rhondda had failed to start this season and whilst three still remained, two of them, Treherbert and Merthyr Tydfil, had won just 1 of 25 games between them. Merthyr were slapped down at Central Park with Wigan recording a new record victory, beating the 56-0 against Aberdare the season before. Jim Leytham's six tries also matched the club record for most tries in a single game set by Bert Jenkins against Bradford in December 1907.
