Having been humbled in the Challenge Cup Semi Final the
previous Saturday, Wigan set out to make sure they didn't waste their whole
season's effort in the Championship Play Offs. They began with the visit of
4th placed Batley to Central Park, but the conditions were awful after heavy
rain fell for much of the day. This led to a heavy pitch and a hard slog for
the two teams but it was Batley who got to grips better, taking a 2-0
penalty goal lead and only Wigan's defence stopped them scoring more. Before
the break though Wigan found a try from Jack Barton that was converted by
Jim Leytham for a 5-2 lead. At half time, Wigan sorted out their wet weather
tactics and performed far better. Once Gomer Gunn scored a converted try for
10-2, Wigan had control for the rest of the game and won 18-2 in the end. |
