Summary:l |
Rugby League had been established in New
Zealand in 1905 and two years on they would become the first International
Rugby League Side to Tour. This was the 14th match of a 49 match "All Golds"
tour which would start and end with games in Australia and included a match
in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) before 36 matches in England and Wales between October
1907 and February 1908. The significance of this victory for Wigan was that
the "All Golds" had yet to lose in their previous 13 games, although
Wakefield had held them to a draw.
30,000 packed in Central Park for this game,
which would prove to be the biggest crowd of the entire tour by a margin of
6,000. Such was the crowd that crush barriers broke within the terraces.
Wigan had taken a quick 3rd minute lead with a Jim Leytham unconverted try
but an effort from Edgar Wrigley equalised for 3-3. A second try for Leytham
restored Wigan's early three point advantage before half time. It was tight
for 20 minutes into the second half before a quick fire double of tries put
Wigan in great command. First Leytham completed a hat-trick before a
brilliant try from Bert Jenkins, in which he "had to dodge through
practically the whole New Zealand team" put Wigan 12-3 up with 15 minutes to
go. New Zealand scored a converted try on 70 minutes from Adam Lile but
Wigan would hang on for an historic victory. |
