Jim Sullivan had been ruled out for a few weeks
with his rib injury and Wigan could have done with his goal kicking here in
this tight match against Second Placed Swinton. The weather was awful with
rain lashing onto a muddy pitch and that contributed to an awful spectacle.
Wigan took the lead with a penalty goal from Ken Gee but Hodgson levelled
for Swinton with one of his own before half time. Swinton then kicked
another penalty early in the second half with one newspaper accusing the
Wigan crowd of bad sportsmanship for boo-ing whilst the kick was taken. That
proved to be that but late in the game both Wigan's George Banks and
Swinton's Wright were Sent Off for "improper methods of scrummaging".
