A 4:00pm midweek replay still saw 25,000 turn out to watch at Central Park. On a sunny evening, Hector Gee scored to put Wigan 3-0 up in the third minute before Castleford equalised with a try from Walker. Before Half Time, Gee scored a well taken second try, which was converted by Jim Sullivan for an 8-3 half time lead. Cunliffe then scored for Castleford to bring that deficit down to 8-6. Wigan dominated the final quarter but still had to edge their way past the winning post. Sullivan had missed a penalty before finally kicking on and the tie was only decided when Eddie Holder scored a try in the final minute.
