When Wigan started Easter they were a point
behind Salford in fourth having played four matches more then them. They
ended it five clear of them. Ok them games in hand were still their but now
Salford had to win them all. Wigan destroyed them here in the first half,
leading 13-0 by half time. Leeds also lost for their third time over Easter,
although they had the difficult task of travelling to league leading Hull,
it eliminated them from contention.
All that could deny Wigan now was Salford
winning all of their final three games. The first of those three games was
only played 10 days after this match and Salford stayed alive with a 8-4 win
away at Rochdale. They then beat Huddersfield 16-8 on April 25th to take it
right down to the wire. But on Tuesday April 28th, Wigan's play off semi
final place was secured with Salford losing their "win and in" match away at
York 10-5. So, Wigan had made the play offs despite having started the
season with 8 defeats out of their first 11 matches. |
