With these two sides having contested Championship and Lancashire Cup Finals during the calendar year, their was much interested in this Christmas Day fixture at Central Park. Wigan topped the table before the match, despite having failed to win any of their four matches during December. Salford were sixth at kick off but had games in hand over all sides above them. Things fell for Wigan though during this victory. Salford scrum half Emlyn Jenkins was injured early in the match and had leave the field for 15 minutes. He later returned even though he was struggling badly. Later they had Barney Hudson sent off which practically reduced them to 11 men. Wigan had the lead before Jenkins departed. Gwynne Davies took advantage of a mistake by Gus Risman but Sullivan failed to convert. The only other first half score was a penalty from Risman which made it Wigan 3 Salford 2 at half time. Salford then took the lead with a second penalty before another Salford error in defence allowed Len Mason to score. Sullivan converted for a 8-4 Wigan lead. Then Joe Golby took advantage of the injured Jenkins to score another for 13-4 before Jack Morley wrapped up the scoring late on. Salford did kick a third penalty during the second half but the injury to Jenkins and then the send off left them unable to cope.
