Salford were favourites for this Championship Final with them being the previous season's league champion whilst also finishing top of the table 11 points clear of anyone else. In fact Wigan had lost more league games in this one season (12) than Salford had done in the previous two season's combined (11). That said, although Wigan had been perhaps lucky to get past Leeds in the Semi Final, they came into the Final in fantastic form having won 13 of their last 14 league matches.

Wigan took the lead in the 10th Minute following an error from Salford. Emlyn Jenkins pass to Gus Risman fell to ground and Ossie Griffiths scooped up the loose ball. On the half break he found George Bennett who had both Jack Morley and Gwynne Davies in support. Bennett found Davies who finished under the posts, which meant an easy conversion for Sullivan made it 5-0.

The game looked to be drifting all the way to half time with the same score but Wigan found a massive try in the 38th Minute. It was a superb individual effort from Jack Morley. He had the ball on half way and after hacking ahead he won the race with Les Pearson to ground the ball. Sullivan converted again to give Wigan a 10-0 lead at half time.

Salford gave out stronger at the start of the second half and found a try that was soft from a Wigan point of view. Jenkins scored it but Risman missed the extras, leaving Salford still two scores down at 10-3.

The next try was clearly going to be huge but it didn't come for a long time. In fact the next score was a drop goal (worth two points until 1974) from Jim Sullivan in the 72nd Minute. Time was ticking away for Salford and in the end Wigan found a cherry on top of the cake try in the last minute with Davies sending Bill Targett over. Sullivan missed the extras but it didn't matter. Wigan had won their fourth League Title, a remarkable achievement considering they had been in 12th Place when they kicked off against Featherstone on February 14th.
