Summary:l

Dicky Twose' try in the 16th Minute opened the scoring and Jim Sullivan converted for 5-0. It was a deserved lead at the time but the momentum soon swung York's way and the responded with a try from Moores that made it 5-3 at half time. Wigan though suffered a killing blow with Gordon Innes retiring injured at half time, which reduced them to 12 men. That allowed York to take the lead within three minutes of the restart after Saddington scored a try and Dingsdale kicked the conversion. Innes returned but he was lame and "almost a hindrance" to Wigan. However, they did rally and Jim Sullivan kicked a drop goal (worth 2 points until 1974) to reduce York's lead to 8-7. York though found another converted try and Wigan, with Innes iniffective, struggled to fight back.
