Wigan had beaten Widnes at Central Park the week before
but faltered here despite the home side playing a few reserves. Top 4 rivals
Swinton and Salford were playing each other but Wigan needed their own
results because those two held games in hand. This loss dropped Wigan out of
the top 4 after Swinton had won 5-4.
