Summary:l |
"One of the best cup ties in recent years" but it was St
Helens who made the progression to Wembley by "out-playing" Wigan. They
dominated the first half to lead 10-0 after tries from Alf Ellaby and Trevor
Hall and two conversions from George Lewis. Another try from Ellaby, plus
two more goals from Lewis, extended that lead to 17-0 before Wigan managed
to get on the score sheet. Wigan got back to 17-7 after a try from Tom
Beetham and two goals, one a penalty, from Jim Sullivan but Saints killed
the tie with a converted try from Bill Mercer. Johnny Ring claimed a
consolation with a great try for Wigan in the last minute, in which he
scored from half way, but it was too little, too late. 24,000 attended this
replay and like they had done on the Saturday, they set a new ground record,
this time for Leigh's Mather Lane which was their home until 1940. £1,600
was added to the Rugby League Council's coffers, on top of the £4,300 the
two semi finals on the Saturday had brought them. I'm sure they were made
up!. |
