If Wigan had beaten, or drawn with, Leeds here they would have qualified for the "Top 4" play offs. But Leeds needed the win to get in themselves. Wigan had lost four games in a row coming into this match and had been very jaded by both their Cup Quarter Final and Semi Final requiring replays. This was perhaps highlighted best by them requiring to give a debut to Fred Ryder at Stand Off who had been an emergency signing from Warrington. Wigan had hope at half time when they were only 12-5 down but by full time they had been demoralised with Roy Kinnear and John Sherrington both leaving the field injured before the end of the match. If Hull KR had lost Wigan would have survived but they won 19-0 at Castleford and thus, remarkably, Wigan had fallen down from 2nd in the table to 5th on the final day. A staggering turnaround considering seven days earlier, Wigan had kicked off top of the table!
