After drawing at Swinton on the Saturday, the sides now
met in a Semi Final replay at Mather Lane in Leigh. The prize of playing
Dewsbury at Wembley was up for grabs and the match proved just as tight as
the original tie. Wigan had built up a good 8-0 lead by half time with tries
from Arthur Binks and Johnny Ring, plus one conversion by Jim Sullivan. Then
after half time Roy Kinnear, who had missed the first game with "flu",
scored to stretch Wigan's lead to 13-0 after Sullivan converted. All looked
rosy for Wigan but then came a moment that flipped the momentum totally. Len
Mason was Sent Off and Recreation soon launched a comeback with the extra
man advantage. Wilson scored first, to which Dingsdale converted off the
touchline for 13-5 before Bailey scored, to which Dingsdale converted again.
Recs knew a try now would level the scores but they decided to play it safe
on 73 minutes and kick a penalty goal for 13-12 instead of going for the
try. Perhaps that came back to haunt Recs because Wigan ended up holding on,
but boy had they sweated in the end. The attendance of 21,940 had set a new
record crowd for Mather Lane. |
