Widnes had a wind advantage first half but the game was scoreless right up until half time. Even though that advantage turned round in Wigan's favour, it was Widnes who took the lead with a drop goal (worth two points until 1974-75) from Paddy Douglas. Then a Jimmy Hoey penalty goal doubled that lead to 4-0. Sullivan halved that lead to 4-2 with a penalty goal but Wigan time was beginning to tick on Wigan until the 70th Minute when Roy Kinnear sent Lou Brown over for a try. Wigan hung on to take out a 5-4 win, which secured their sixth Lancashire Cup success.
