Wigan's match on the prior Saturday at Central Park had been postponed due to a Waterlogged Pitch but conditions were much better for this midweek cup replay against Oldham. After a 5-5 draw nine days earlier, a tight match was perhaps expected again but Wigan ran riot with a comprehensive spanking of Oldham in front of 20,000 fans. Johnny Ring was loving midweek matches this season because in six midweek games he had amassed an amazing 19 tries! He'd already completed his hat-trick before half time with a further try from Tommy Howley, two Jim Sullivan conversions and a Howley drop goal having them 18-0 by the break. To make matters worse for Oldham, they had Brough sent off by the referee. That contributed to the massacre that ended in a 52-3 result, that took Wigan into the Lancashire Cup Final against Swinton.
